Aata (flour) good for Diabetics!

Although we use multigrain mixtures or add various flours in our chapati (roti) to make it tastier and healthier, but adding flours such as besan, bajra, jowar, soybean flour, or oats bran flour lowers Glycemic load of our meal and manages our blood sugar levels.

We have often seen people with Diabetes completely avoiding chapatis since they are prepared from Wheat, in fear that it can cause high blood sugar levels! This may help control blood sugar levels for a time being but it can make your body habitual to a low carb diet, which makes it difficult to manage sugar levels in long-term. But fear not, we always have a solution. Adding certain flour or flours along with wheat in dough to prepare chapati can help you manage weight, control blood sugar, and also provide with abundant nutrition.

You can add following flours in your chapati along with Wheat:

  1. Besan (Chickpea Flour): Besan is an excellent source of protein. It also contains other nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium, and folate.
  2. Bajra: Bajra is rich in iron and insoluble fiber which helps in preventing constipation and improving digestion.
  3. Jowar: Jowar is a rich source of fiber and iron.
  4. Soybean Flour (Soybean ka Atta): Soybean flour is the richest source of protein in a vegetarian’s diet. It is also rich in iron and B- Vitamins.
  5. Oats Bran Flour (Oats ka Choker): Oats Bran flour prevents constipation and reduces weight in obese people. Also, it controls blood sugar levels in diabetes patients.

Always remember to avoid these flour if you have Diabetes:

  1. Maida (Refined Flour): Maida lacks fiber content which causes health issues such as constipation, acidity, and weight gain. In patients with diabetes, it causes high blood sugar levels.
  2. Ragi (Nachini): Ragi has a high glycemic index and causes high blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes but non-diabetic individuals can add it in their diet without any worries since it is a rich source of calcium.
